Is there a mahjong quiz app that explains why an answer is right?
Yes. Mahj Trainer is an American mahjong quiz app that shows the reason after every answer. When you miss a rack, it also adds a "Why not" note on the section you picked, explaining why it does not fit. The quizzes cover tiles, the card's sections, Charleston passes and table calls.
The four beginner rooms are free on iPhone, iPad and Android, with no account.
How do the explanations work?
Each drill explains in the way that fits its question:
- Tile Check and Table Rules: multiple-choice questions, each followed by a short explanation of the rule.
- Read the Rack: you see 13 tiles and name the card section they are chasing. Every answer gets its reason, and a wrong pick also gets a "Why not" note about the section you chose.
- Pick Your Pass: you choose three tiles to pass in the Charleston, then see the coach's three and why.
- Keep or Throw: you make the call, then flip the card for the coach's answer and its reasoning.
- Play a Hand: the coach grades every discard and shows the arithmetic behind it. When two discards are equally good, both are marked correct.
Missed questions come back first in your next mixed session, so the explanation gets a second chance to stick.
What does a question look like?
From the free Tile Check quiz:
Which dragon goes with a crak hand? Red Dragon, Green Dragon, Soap, or any dragon.
Answer: Red Dragon. Red goes with Craks (C for Crak, R for Red). Green belongs to Bams, and Soap to Dots.
Which questions are free?
The free rooms hold a 16-question tile quiz, 9 racks to read, 9 Charleston deals, 14 keep-or-throw calls and a 16-question table rules quiz, plus flashcards with the rule on the back. On iPhone and iPad, a daily round of five Mahj Minute questions is free as well. Mahj+ adds an extra set in each room, generated racks that never run out, and advanced drills on defense, jokers and expert rack reading.
Which other apps explain their answers?
Tile Wise ends each topic with a quiz that explains each answer and links back to the lesson. MAHJ: Learn American Mahjong pairs its lessons with drills and an AI coach. Both are American mahjong apps. Riichi, Chinese and Hong Kong mahjong use different rules, so quiz apps for those games will not match an NMJL card. The American mahjong app comparison covers the rest.
