Is there a free American mahjong learning app with no subscription?
Yes. Mahj Trainer is free to download, and its four beginner practice rooms stay free with no subscription, no account and no ads. It covers the tiles, the card's sections, the Charleston and keep-or-throw calls, on iPhone, iPad and Android.
An optional upgrade, Mahj+, adds extra practice sets and advanced drills. It is sold monthly, yearly or as a one-time lifetime purchase, and nothing in the four beginner rooms needs it.
What is free in Mahj Trainer?
- The Tile Room: 12 tile flashcards and a 16-question tile rules quiz.
- The Card Room: 16 flashcards on the card's sections and 9 racks to read.
- The Charleston Room: 10 rules and strategy flashcards and 9 practice deals.
- The Table Room: 14 keep-or-throw calls and a 16-question table rules quiz.
- How to Play: a six-page beginner primer, available any time from Settings.
- Play a Hand: one coached hand a day, with every discard graded.
- The daily Mahj Minute (iPhone and iPad): five questions a day toward a monthly challenge.
- The reference: a searchable glossary and a page for every card section.
Every answer shows its reason, and progress, streaks and stats stay on your device.
What does Mahj+ add?
- An extra practice set in each of the four rooms, using the drills you already know.
- The Master Tables: advanced Charleston, a defense school, expert rack reading and joker school.
- Endless Practice, which generates new racks so reading practice never runs out.
- Fix My Mistakes, which brings back what you missed on a spaced schedule, and a ninety-second Timed Challenge.
- Unlimited Play a Hand.
Monthly and yearly plans start with a one-week free trial, and the lifetime purchase is paid once. Prices are shown in the app before you buy and vary by region.
Will the app ask me to subscribe?
It offers a free week of Mahj+ during setup, and a Get Started button skips straight to the free rooms. On iPhone and iPad, a trial offer sometimes slides up after a good result: a few times in your first two days, then every few days, then weekly, and every two weeks after that. Close it and keep practicing. A small Mahj+ card also sits under each result. The free rooms never lock and never expire.
