Is there a mahjong practice app for iPad?
Yes. Mahj Trainer is a free American mahjong practice app that runs on iPad as well as iPhone. It drills the tiles, the card's sections, the Charleston and keep-or-throw calls in five-minute sessions, with the reason shown after every answer.
It needs no opponents, no account and no internet connection, and four practice rooms are free.
How does Mahj Trainer work on iPad?
Mahj Trainer is one app for iPhone and iPad. On iPad the layout was built for the larger screen:
- Short questions and racks sit in the middle of the screen instead of being pinned to the top, and the flashcard deck keeps a readable width.
- The app runs in portrait and landscape.
- At large accessibility text sizes the home screen and the room grids fall back to a single column.
The layout was checked on iPad mini, iPad Air 11-inch and iPad Pro 13-inch, in portrait and landscape and at several text sizes. The app needs iPadOS 17 or later.
What can you practice on iPad?
Four free rooms, each a short drill on one skill:
- The Tile Room: flashcards on every tile family, then a quiz on the rules new players mix up.
- The Card Room: flashcards on the card's sections, then racks of 13 tiles where you name the section they are chasing.
- The Charleston Room: practice deals where you pick three tiles to pass and compare with the coach. More on the Charleston practice page.
- The Table Room: keep-or-throw calls and table rules.
Also free: one Play a Hand a day, where you draw and discard from a real wall while the coach grades every throw; the daily Mahj Minute, five questions a day that add up to a monthly challenge score; How to Play; and a searchable reference and glossary.
Where does it run?
Mahj Trainer also runs on iPhone and on Android. The Android page lists what differs there. Progress stays on the device you practice on.
