What's in Deep Cuts?

Five ways to play, stories to read, and the day in music history.

A daily ten

Ten questions a day from your crates: trivia, two song clips, a matchup and a cover to finish. Never more than one hard one.

Name That Tune

Hear a preview of the real recording from Apple Music and pick the song.

Who Did It First?

Famous covers. Name the artist who recorded the song first, from Blind Willie McTell on up.

Which Came First?

Two records, one older. Pick it.

The Hard Ones

Only the toughest questions in a crate, for people who read the liner notes.

The fact behind it

Every answer comes with the story, so a miss still teaches you something.

Stories

Long reads on the records and the shows, from Fillmore East in 1971 to Summer Jam at Watkins Glen.

On This Day

What happened in music on today's date, from Wikipedia.

Still on the road

Acts from your crates who still tour, and music venues near you.

Does Deep Cuts need an account?

How it's built.

The Pitch

Deep Cuts started with my dad, who grew up on '60s and '70s rock and knows the records cold. He wanted trivia that goes past what any radio listener knows, with the story behind each answer, and not a single wrong one.

So the app is built in crates, the way a record store is. Pick Southern Rock and you get Duane Allman and the Fillmore, not a quiz on who sang "Hey Jude". Pick Pop or the '80s and it stays quick and fun over coffee.

What Mattered

Accuracy first. Every question, song year and story is checked against sources before it ships, and anything uncertain is cut. A wrong answer key is the fastest way to lose a fan.

Real records. Real album art and previews of the actual recordings, so Name That Tune sounds like the record you know.

Readable. Built for larger text sizes, because a lot of the people who know these records best read with them turned up.

Always growing. New questions arrive every week, and every answer has a Report a problem button. Fixes reach the app without waiting for an update.
